Felix Verdejo and Josenilson Dos Santos fight Friday night at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum for the WBO Latino Lightweight title.
Felix Verdejo enters this fight with a 18-0 record that includes 13 knockouts. This will be Verdejo’s third fight this year, and he’s coming off a June win over Ivan Najera. Verdejo is simply an up-and-comer superstar at 22 years old who has the ability to surpass Miguel Cotto as the top boxer in Puerto Rico. Verdejo has a terrific offensive game that results in many short fights and makes him very tough to counter as an opponent. Verdejo knows how to pick his spots, is extremely quick defensively and lands a vicious uppercut. Simply put: Verdejo is a boxing star in the making. The only real concern with Verdejo so far is that he’s still working his way up the charts and hasn’t exactly fought many respectable name. This will be Verdejo’s seventh fight in Puerto Rico, his home country.
USA TODAY Sports
Josenilson Dos Santos enters this fight with a 27-3 record that includes 17 knockouts. Santos has split his last four fights and is coming off a April 2014 loss to Paulus Moses. Santos hasn’t fought in a year and a half, which should lead to fresh legs and help ease his mind after losing two of his last three fights. Santos is a long, lengthy fighter at 5’11” and has an impressive reach of 68 inches. Santos is able to use his effective uppercut due to his height advantage. Santos obviously has some power in his punches and is a decent defensive fighter as well. The downside is that Santos has yet to fight a fighter this skilled and we haven’t seen him in good form in quite some time. This will be Santos’ first career fight in Puerto Rico.
It’s going to take an impressive performance from a special fighter to beat Verdejo anytime soon. If you’re not familiar with Verdejo and his ability, you better hop on board now because the kid is going to flat out become a star in no time.
Not taking anything from Santos, but Verdejo should win this fight rather easily and get that much closer to a world title.
