Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal fight Saturday night at the Bell Centre for the WBA (Super), IBF and WBO Light Heavyweight titles.
Sergey Kovalev enters this fight with a 28-0-1 record that includes 25 knockouts. Kovalev has won 12 straight fights and is coming off a July win over Nadjib Mohammedi. Kovalev is a patient fighter with a high IQ and does a nice job of taking what his opponent gives him. However, Kovalev is also one of the stronger punchers in the sport and will take advantage of any little opening, usually resulting in a knockout. Kovalev has won 15 of his last 16 fights by way of knockout. The downside with Kovalev is that he is prone to taking big punches, as we saw in his bout against Jean Pascal. Kovalev does leave himself open at times and that’s dangerous against another skilled fighter. This will be Kovalev’s third career fight in Canada.
USA TODAY Sports
Jean Pascal enters this fight with a 30-3-1 record and that includes 17 knockouts. Pascal has won four of his last six fights and is coming off a July win over Yunieski Gonzalez. Pascal is an extremely aggressive fighter who attacks every chance he gets with his impressive hand speed. Pascal is extremely athletic and has explosive punching power that resulted in a ton of knockouts early in his career. The downside with Pascal is that he relies a little too much on his athleticism and isn’t the most technical fighter in the world. Pascal can be sloppy at times, and fighters such as Bernard Hopkins and Kovalev have already made him pay. Pascal has fought all but three of his fights in Canada.
These two fought back in March, and Kovalev won by TKO in a fight he pretty much controlled from the start. It’s hard seeing this bout being any different. Kovalev is the more skilled and disciplined fighter, who will once again take advantage of Pascal’s aggressiveness and miscues on the defensive end.
I look for Kovalev to again win this fight by knockout.
