Felix Verdejo and William Silva fight late Saturday night at Madison Square Garden for the WBO Latino Lightweight title.
Felix Verdejo enters this fight with a 19-0 record that includes 14 knockouts. This will be Verdejo’s fourth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a December win over Josenilson Dos Santos. Verdejo continues to impress boxing fans as he’s a collision course to become the best Puerto Rican boxer since Miguel Cotto, as he’s still just 22 years old. Verdejo has insane power, a high boxing IQ, and he just needs one or two punches for a fight to end. The only concern so far for Verdejo is that he hasn't’ fought many reputable names just yet at this stage of his career. Give it time, as he’s a star in the making. This will be Verdejo’s sixth fight in New York.
USA TODAY Sports
William Silva enters this fight with a 23-0 record that includes 14 knockouts. This will be Silva’s third fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a November win over Bayan Jargal. Silva is a confident fighter who won’t be intimidated by the bright lights, and he’s wanted to fight Verdejo for quite some time. Silva has some power behind his punches that has ended his last two fights in knockout, and he has a massive height advantage here at 6’1” over the 5’9” Verdejo. The downside with Silva is that he’s never fought anyone close to as talented as Verdejo and hasn’t been in a fight this big in terms of national TV and MSG. This will be just Silva’s fourth fight in the United States and first in New York.
I usually like to give the benefit of the doubt, especially when odds are so massive, but I give Silva no chance to be the first guy to beat Verdejo. Silva just isn’t polished enough to hang with a guy as talented as Verdejo. When you add the fact this will be held in New York, a big Puerto Rican community, Verdejo should have little trouble mopping the floor with Silva.
Verdejo takes another step to becoming a household name.
