Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez fight Saturday night at the Honda Center for the WBA (Super) Featherweight title.
Leo Santa Cruz enters this fight with a 31-0-1 record that includes 17 knockouts. This will be Cruz’s fourth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a August win over Abner Mares. Cruz throws quick, powerful punches that have produced five knockouts in his last 10 fights. Cruz likes to dictate the pace of a fight and is nearly unstoppable once he gets in his comfort zone and has his opponent figured out. The only real concern with Cruz is that he does have holes in his defense, but that really hasn’t affected in much with 32 fights under his belt. This will be Cruz’s 15th fight in California.

Kiko Martinez enters this fight with a 35-6 record that includes 26 knockouts. Martinez has won eight of his last 10 fights and is coming off a December win over Miguel Gonzalez. Martinez is a tough, experienced fighter who doesn’t mind trading punches and can be a little stubborn with his style at times. Martinez throws a lot of punches over the course of a fight and is dangerous the longer a fight lasts. The concern with Martinez is that his aggressive style is the only way he knows how to fight, so an undefeated champ should be able to expose that over time. This will be Martinez’s first fight in California and first fight in the United States since 2013.
Kiko Martinez is a dangerous opponent given his experience and the fact he’s an aggressor who will look to land the big punch that would shock the world. However, Cruz is too polished of a fighter and has a variety of ways he can win. With Cruz passing his test in Mares, it’s hard seeing him trip up here.
Look for Cruz to hold onto his title and remain undefeated.
