Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews fight Saturday at the Echo Arena for the WBO Lightweight title.
Terry Flanagan enters this fight with a 29-0 record that includes 12 knockouts. This will be Flanagan’s fourth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a October win over Diego Magdaleno. Flanagan has picked up a couple of notable wins recently over Magdaleno and Jose Zepeda, proving that he’s the best 135-pound fighter in the world at the moment. Flanagan has the nickname Turbo due to his rapid punches, quick hands and relentless offensive attack that has wore down every fighter he’s faced to date. Flanagan is all business in the ring and tough to stop once he gets going. Flanagan does have tendonitis in his left foot, which is why this fight was postponed earlier in the year. Flanagan has fought his entire career in the United Kingdom.

Derry Mathews enters this fight with a 38-9-2 record that includes 20 knockouts. Mathews has won his last four fights and is coming off a April win over Tony Luis. Mathews is a knockout artist who just needs that one punch to connect in order for a fight to end. In fact, only four of Mathews’ wins since 2011 have come by decision. Mathews is also highly motivated for this rematch after losing a unanimous decision to Flanagan back in 2012. The concern is that Mathews doesn’t have the best chin in the world, which has resulted in him getting knocked out plenty of times throughout his career. Mathews has fought his entire career in the United Kingdom.
Besides maybe knockout power, Mathews doesn’t have anything over Flanagan, as there’s not much he does at a high level. Flanagan is simply the better boxer in all aspects and should be able to take advantage of Mathews weak chin.
Flanagan holds onto his belt and goes 2-0 against Mathews.
