Luke Campbell and Gary Sykes fight Saturday at the Sheffield Arena for the Commonwealth Lightweight title.
Luke Campbell enters this fight with a 12-1 record that includes 10 knockouts. This will be Campbell’s fifth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a December loss to Yvan Mendy. Campbell is a very polished boxer with great instincts, good power and the ability to adjust after a few rounds. Campbell is an impressive counter puncher, as he does a fine job of sitting back and taking advantage of his opponents mistakes. The concern with Campbell is that he’s still lacking great experience as a professional fighter, and we have no idea how he’ll bounce back after his first loss which cost him the WBC International Lightweight title. Campbell has had all but one of his fights in the UK, his home country.
USA TODAY Sports
Gary Sykes enters this fight with a 28-4 record that includes six knockouts. Sykes has won five of his last six fights and is coming off a July win over Ibrar Riyaz. Sykes is an aggressive fighter who likes to dictate pace and land as many punches as possible. Sykes is capable of throwing some decent combinations and does a nice job of working the body. Sykes also has a proven chin, as his only knockout loss in 32 fights came to Gary Buckland in 2010. The concern with Sykes is that he’s too jumpy and has a lot of holes in his defense, which has led to three losses since 2011. Sykes has fought his entire career in the UK.
I’m not concerned with Campbell’s last fight given that it was a split decision and very controversial. The 28-year-old olympic champion should be just fine. While Sykes has had a solid career, he’s not skilled enough to hang with Campbell in the boxing ring, as he just doesn’t have a single advantage heading into this bout.
Look for Campbell to get the bounce back victory.
