Adrien Broner and Ashley Theophane fight Friday night at the DC Armory for the WBA (Super) Light Welterweight title.
Adrien Broner enters this fight with a 31-2-1 record that includes 23 knockouts. Broner has won four of his last five fights and is coming off a October win over Khabib Allakhverdiev. Broner has an elite skill set with impressive hand speed, movement and overall natural boxing skills. When focused, Broner has the potential to beat anybody, as his power, quickness and defensive ability check all of the boxes. The concern with Broner is that he’s not the most mature fighter in the world and is weak mentally. Broner is also dealing with legal issues, which may have affected his preparation for this fight. This will be Broner’s first fight in Washington.
USA TODAY Sports
Ashley Theophane enters this fight with a 39-6-1 record that includes 11 knockouts. Theophane has won his last six fights and is coming off a September win over Steve Upsher Chambers. Theophane isn’t given much of a chance in this fight, but he is an experienced 35-year-old who has lost all of his bouts by decision. Theophane is an aggressive fighter with a proven chin and unlike Broner, you at least know he’s going to take this bout seriously. The concern with Theophane is his lack of power and the fact he hasn’t been in the ring with somebody as talented as Broner. Theophane’s resume includes a lot of lower tier fighters and no names back in the United Kingdom. This will be Theophane’s first fight in Washington.
I wouldn’t touch this fight at all, as Broner simply doesn’t put in the time to reach his full potential and at any moment could have a meltdown that results in an upset. There’s also the personal issues Broner is dealing with that could impact this bout as well. However, Broner is easily the better and more talented fighter here, so he should have little trouble winning if he shows up focused.
Broner wins this fight, but I wouldn’t be shocked with an upset. Broner is the Yasiel Puig of boxing.
