Jose Pedraza and Stephen Smith fight Saturday night at the Foxwoods Resort for the IBF Super Featherweight title.
Jose Pedraza enters this fight with a 21-0 record that includes 12 knockouts. This will be Pedraza’s third fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a October win over Edner Cherry. Pedraza is a rising star at 26 out of Puerto Rico and hopes to continue climbing the ladder in the rankings. Pedraza has very quick hands with some knockout power, as he does a wonderful job of working the head and body. Pedraza is a fast, accurate puncher who won’t lose many rounds when he’s aggressive. The concern for me with Pedraza is that he tends to drop his hands very low when punching, leaving plenty of room for counters. This will be Pedraza’s first fight in Connecticut.
USA TODAY Sports
Stephen Smith enters this fight with a 23-1 record that includes 13 knockouts. Smith has won 11 straight fights and is coming off a September win over Devis Boschiero. Smith is a crisp accurate puncher who doesn’t waste much time looking to land. Smith doesn’t do a ton of movement in the ring, as he’s always looking to be the aggressor. The concern for Smith is that he hasn’t fought anybody nearly as talented as Pedraza, as his resume has a lot of no-name fighters from the United Kingdom. Smith could be in over his head here. This will be Smith’s first fight in Connecticut.
This is a pretty solid fight when you consider it’s on the undercard. Smith is certainly no slouch and is still one of the better Britain fighters in the sport. However, Pedraza is simply the better boxer here, as his hand speed, power and movement around the ring check all of the boxes. This is a fight where Smith is probably in over his head.
Look for Pedraza to remain undefeated.
