Anthony Dirrell and Caleb Truax fight Friday night at the Trump Taj Mahal.
Anthony Dirrell enters this fight with a 28-1-1 record that includes 22 knockouts. Dirrell has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a September win over Marco Antonio Rubio. Dirrell is a great technical fighter with a high boxing IQ and the ability to adjust to his opponent. Dirrell rarely puts himself in danger and does a good job of sticking to the game plan coming into a bout. Like his brother Andre, Dirrell also packs some power in both hands, which includes a right hand that must be respected. When Dirrell is landing his combinations and being aggressive, he’s an extremely quality boxer who can compete with some of the best. The concern with Dirrell is that his cardio has ben a question mark for a while now, as he wears down at times over the course of a fight. This will be Dirrell’s first fight in New Jersey.

Caleb Truax enters this fight with a 26-2-2 record that includes 16 knockouts. Truax has won six of his last eight fights and is coming off a 2015 loss to Daniel Jacobs. Truax is also a technical boxer who fights to his strengths and doesn’t try to go outside of his comfort zone. Sometimes a little too conservative, Truax does tend to lean on the defensive side and take his chances only when they open up. Truax does have five knockout victories since 2012, but he’s not super aggressive with his punches and can struggle at times to put away somebody with an above-average chin. While he may not do anything special offensively or defensively, Truax is a tough fighter who can take a punch and has proven he can hang in there with fighters who may be more talented than him. This will be Truax’s first fight in New Jersey.
Truax is going to make this fight possibly more competitive than the lines indicate, as he his latest bout against Jacobs proved he can not only take a punch but return the fight as well. As far as winning, however, Dirrell is too polished and too aggressive offensively. Dirrell’s combinations and punching power will be the difference here and lead to a victory.
Look for Dirrell to get one victory closer to 30 on his resume.
