Diego De La Hoya and Rocco Santomauro fight early Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena.
Diego De La Hoya enters this fight with a 14-0 record that includes eight knockouts. This will be De La Hoya’s sixth fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a November win over Giovanni Delgado. De La Hoya is a very aggressive fighter who throws a lot of combinations and lands a high percentage of his shots. De La Hoya does a good job of getting in and out with his punches, but he’s a pitbull when he has an opponent on the ropes and can end a fight really quick. As the cousin of Oscar De La Hoya, the hype surrounding the Golden Kid is building with each bout. The concern with De La Hoya is that he’s still learning at just 21 years old and doesn’t have many decent fighters on his resume just yet, so the hype needs to be under control to an extent. This will be De La Hoya’s fourth fight in Las Vegas.
USA TODAY Sports
Rocco Santomauro enters this fight with a 13-0 record that includes one knockout. This will be Santomauro’s second fight this year, and he’s coming off a February win over Jose Estrella. Santomauro does a nice job of moving around the ring and has a strong left jab that keeps his opponent at bay. Santomauro doesn’t shy away from contact and kind of likes to muck up his fights, as it isn’t exactly the prettiest boxing you’re going to see. Still, it works for Santomauro as he heads into this bout with an undefeated record. The obvious concern with Santomauro is a lack of power, as he struggles to end fights and puts a lot of pressure on each round. Santomauro has fought much of his career in Las Vegas, his current residence.
Santomauro is in over his head here, as he doesn’t have the skill set or the power to put a scare into De La Hoya. This is a big mismatch and could result in Santomauro getting knocked out. This is simply another fight for De La Hoya to stay busy as he climbs his way up in the boxing rankings. I don’t see anything Santomauro can do with the Mexican.
De La Hoya wins yet again.
