Joseph Parker and Carlos Takam fight Saturday at the Vodafone Events Centre for the IBF Heavyweight title eliminator.
Joseph Parker enters this fight with a 18-0 record that includes 16 knockouts. This will be Parker’s seventh fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a January win over Jason Bergman. Parker is currently the face of New Zealand boxing, as he’s exciting and packs a serious punch in both of his hands. Parker has won his last seven fights by knockout and has failed to reach the fifth round in seven of his last nine fights. Parker throws very violent combinations and doesn’t let up one bit. Once Parker gets some momentum and the crowd gets into it, it’s all downhill for his opponent. Parker has fought much of his career in New Zealand, his home country.
USA TODAY Sports
Carlos Takam enters this fight with a 33-2-1 record that includes 25 knockouts. Takam has won four of his last five fights and is coming off a November win over George Arias. Takam still looks sharp despite turning 36 years old at the end of the year. Takam is a busy boxer who spends his rounds throwing a lot of punches and clearly has some pop behind his punches with five of his last seven wins coming by knockout. Takam also has a proven chin who has stood in the ring with restable fighters such as Michael Grant and Tony Thompson. This will be Takam’s first career fight in New Zealand.
This should be an exciting fight for however long it lasts, as both guys like to throw a lot of punches and have some serious power when they land. However, Parker is far younger, has more pure power at this stage and is fighting in his backyard where the crowd support will be insane.
Parker will remain undefeated after this bout.
