Ricky Burns and Michele di Rocco fight Saturday at The SSE Hydro for the WBA Light welterweight title.
Ricky Burns enters this fight with a 39-5-1 record that includes 13 knockouts. Burns has split his last six fights and is coming off a November win over Josh King. Burns has been a little shaky recently with three of his five losses coming since 2014. Burns is quite big for a light welterweight and has a reach of 70 inches that usually make his opponents quite uncomfortable. Burns also has a high boxing IQ and is able to make adjustments that allow him to turn the tide in his favor. Even at 33, Burns is one of the more well conditioned fighters you’ll find, which helps make up for his lack of power. All but one of Burns’ one fights have taken place in the United Kingdom.
USA TODAY Sports
Michele di Rocco enters this fight with a 40-1-1 record that includes 18 knockouts. Di Rocco has won his last 23 fights and is coming off a May win over Alexandre Lepelley. Di Rocco hasn’t lost a fight since 2007 when he was knocked out by Giuseppe Lauri. Di Rocco has won three of his last four fights by knockout and has a proven chin and is willing to trade punches over the course of a fight. The concern with Di Rocco is that this will be the biggest fight of his career and his first well known opponent. This will be Di Rocco’s first career fight in the United Kingdom.
Overall, Burns should make light work of Di Rocco, who isn’t nearly as talented and hasn’t fought a fighter of this caliber in his career. Di Rocco is simply no match here, as he’s slow with his hands and does have defensive flaws at times.
Burns could very well be the second person to knockout Di Rocco. This shouldn’t be much of a fight.
