Andrzej Fonfara and Joe Smith Jr. fight Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion for the WBC International Light heavyweight title.
Andrzej Fonfara enters this fight with a 28-3 record that includes 16 knockouts. Fonfara has won 10 of his last 11 fights and is coming off a October win over Nathan Cleverly. Fonfara has lost just one fight over the last seven years and will be defending his belt for the third straight fight. Fonfara’s only loss during that span came in 2014 to Adonis Stevenson, which we’ll likely get a rematch of sooner or later. Fonfara is a long, lengthy fighter with a reach of 77 inches and is often able to use his size to his advantage. Fonfara hasn’t had a knockout in three years, but lands crisp and accurate punches and is a very smart boxer at 28 years old. Fonfara has fought much of his career in Chicago, his current residence.

Joe Smith Jr. enters this fight with a 21-1 record that includes 17 knockouts. Smith has won his last 15 fights and is coming off a April win over Fabiano Pena. Smith has been on a tear over the years, which includes victories over Will Rosinsky and Tyrell Hendrix. Smith’s only career loss came against Eddie Caminero back in 2010. Smith is an obvious knockout artist, as he’s won five of his last six bouts by stoppage and has a very powerful right hand. The Irish Bomber throws devastating combinations and is hard to stop once he finds an opening and gets going. The problem with Smith is that we haven’t seen him against a fighter this talented or this smart, as he’s just now starting to step up in competition. This will be Smith’s first career fight in Chicago.
This betting line is really underestimating Smith, who has the power and aggressive advantages entering this fight. There is value if you want to be ballsy and predict an upset. However, Fonfara should be able to take advantage of Smith’s wildness and the lack of experience also doesn’t help Smith.
Should be an entertaining bout, but Fonfara is the better overall boxer and should be able to take advantage of Smith’s weaknesses.
