Rau'shee Warren and Juan Carlos Payano fight Saturday at the UIC Pavilion for the WBA and IBO Bantamweight titles.
Rau'shee Warren enters this fight with a 13-1 record that includes four knockouts. Warren has won five of his last seven fights and is coming off a August loss to Payano. Warren is out to prove himself after a controversial loss in a split decision, the first of his career. Warren is a solid defensive fighter with terrific head movement and the ability to capitalize on his opponent's mistakes. Warren is a smart fighter who knows what it takes to win rounds and does a fine job of making key mistakes in the ring. The issue with Warren is his lack of power, as he has just one knockout over the last three years. This will be Warren’s second fight in Chicago.
USA TODAY Sports
Juan Carlos Payano enters this fight with a 17-0 record that has eight knockouts. This will be Payano’s second fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a August win over Warren. Payano is now earning his stripes on the pro level, as he also beat Anselmo Moreno in 2014. Payano is an aggressive fighter who likes to throw a lot of punches and work the inside early and often. Payano also has some clear punching power, as he gave Jundy Maraon his first loss in knockout fashion. The concern with Payano is that he can sometimes be a little too wild with his offensive attack leaving room for counters. This will be Payano’s first fight in Chicago.
In a fight that can go either way, I usually side with the aggressor, and that’s Payano. He should be able to impose his will on the inside and has the power to be the deciding factor overall. Warren has to work so hard to win rounds and the aggressiveness of Payano won’t allow him to dictate the pace of this fight.
This should be another highly entertaining bout, but I have the same result happening with Payano winning by decision.
