Andre Ward and Alexander Brand fight Saturday night at the Oracle Arena on HBO.
Andre Ward enters this fight with a 29-0 record that includes 15 knockouts. This will be Ward’s third fight since 2015, and he’s coming off a March win over Sullivan Barrera. Ward remains one of the top boxers in America and seems to have taken this fight as a warm up for his November bout against Sergey Kovalev. Ward remains a very smart boxer who has terrific defense and rarely gets caught out of position. Ward takes advantage of his opponents mistakes and has the power to end a fight at any moment. However, Ward has won six of his last eight bouts by decision, so it’s been awhile since he’s landed that vicious blow. Ward has fought much of his career in California, his birth state.
USA TODAY Sports
Alexander Brand enters this fight with a 25-1 record that includes 19 knockouts. Brand has won eight straight fights and is coming off a December win over Medzhid Bektemirov. Brand continues to win fights despite being 39 years old and just gave Bektemirov his first career loss. Brand is an aggressive fighter who relies on volume punches and overwhelming power. Brand can be a bit sloppy at times but really only needs to land that one punch to tilt the tables in his favor. Being a considerable underdog in this bout, Brand is certainly going to be aggressive and look to land some powerful strikes that potentially hurt Ward and clear the way for a knockout. This will be Brand’s first fight in California.
Brand is no pushover, especially for a guy his age, as he’s beaten some decent fighters over his career and is pretty confident. However, Ward is far younger and more skilled. Ward’s defense won’t allow Brand to dictate pace and create the opening that he’s looking for. In fact, Ward is going to be able to take advantage of Brand’s aggressiveness and likely end this fight with a right hand.
I see Ward winning this fight by knockout.
