Claressa Shields and Hanna Gabriel fight Friday at the Masonic Temple for the International Boxing Federation World Female Middleweight Title.
Claressa Shields enters this fight with a 5-0 record that includes two knockouts. This will be Shields’ fifth fight since 2017, and she’s coming off a January win over Tori Nelson. Shields is coming off a 10-round fight with a 40-year-old, but it’s not that surprising considering we know Nelson is a tough fighter with a big heart and a strong chin. Shields is a 23-year-old American who stands at 5’8”, has a 68 inch reach and an orthodox stance. Shields will be dropping down to middleweight for this fight in hopes of earning titles in three different weight classes. As for her skill set, Shields is an athletic boxer with great movement and the ability to counter quickly with combinations. Shields is an aggressive boxer who has a high work rate and usually bullies her opponent with constant punches and a relentless attack. Shields has a business like approach in the ring, if you’re not willing to match her aggressiveness, she’s going to destroy you. It’s really that simple. This will be Shields’ fourth career fight in Detroit.

Hanna Gabriel enters this fight with a 18-1-1 record that includes 11 knockouts. Gabriel has won each of her last five fights, and she’s coming off a October win over Oxandia Castillo. Gabriel will move up to middleweight for the first time since her pro debut 11 years ago and has a shot at the biggest victory of her career yet. Gabriel is a 35-year-old Costa Rican who stands at 5’7” and has an orthodox stance. Gabriel hasn’t lost a fight since her 2013 meeting against Castillo, her only career loss and was a second round knockout. Gabriel moves around the ring well, as she does a fine job of getting in and out with her attack, and she puts together solid combinations that land cleanly. Gabriel has a strong right hand and does her best work when she’s walking down her opponent and looking to let her hands go. Gabriel has won seven of her last 10 fights by knockout, but you’d like to see her be more aggressive than she has been in the past. This will be Gabriel’s first career fight in the United States.
Gabriel is a respectable champion who has won belts in different weight classes and has fought in front of large crowds, so she won’t be intimidated for this bout. However, Gabriel isn’t the aggressive power puncher needed to counter Shields. If T-Rex doesn’t respect your offensive attack or you’re not willing to trade punches, you’re going to get walked over. Shields is cut from the same cloth as Cris Cyborg, and there’s not many fighters willing to exchange with that powerful and aggressive work rate. Unfortunately, that’s about the only way you can beat them, as the fundamental, defense and feel your way out doesn’t cut it.
Shields rolls in this fight.
