Mikaela Mayer and Helen Joseph fight Tuesday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Mikaela Mayer enters this fight with a 12-0 record that includes five knockouts. This will be Mayer’s fourth fight since 2019, and she’s coming off an October win over Alejandra Soledad Zamora. Mayer continues to make a case as the best boxer within the division, and she’s fresh off defending the NABF female super featherweight title for the third time. Mayer is 29 years old, stands at 5’9”, has a 66-inch reach and an orthodox stance. Mayer has been a pro for about three years, as she piled up an impressive amateur career, which includes a bronze medal in the 2012 World Championships. Mayer is a technically sound boxer who does a great job of cutting the ring off, getting her opponent backed into a corner and unleashing combinations. Mayer works the body well, is highly effective with her counters and she has decent had movement on the defensive side. Mayer may not have devastating punching power, but her work rate is up there with some of the best and it’s hard for opponents to match her energy. This will be Mayer’s third career fight in Nevada.

Helen Joseph enters this fight with a 17-4-2 record that includes 10 knockouts. Joseph has won five of her last seven fights, and she’s coming off a November loss against Delfine Persoon. Joseph does enter this big fight coming off a loss, but she gained valuable experience against another quality name and probably the best Belgium boxer on the female side. Win or lose this bout, Joseph is proving she’s willing to step in the ring with the best the sport has to offer. Joseph is 31 years old, stands at 5’5” and has an orthodox stance. There’s limited film available on Joseph, but she rolls with the punches well and has some pop despite her smaller frame. Joseph has produced clean knockouts in her career and has a strong right hand that can do the job if landed cleanly. Joseph has also sparred with Claressa Shields, so she’s certainly no slouch and has shared the ring with some respectable names. This will be Joseph’s sixth career fight in the United States.

Joseph is a battle tested fighter who has the power edge in this fight, so you can make an argument that she’s a live underdog. Joseph just needs to land that right hand once to give herself an honest shot at an upset. With that said, Joseph has also had trouble in majority of her toughest fights and a lot of those opponents weren’t on the level of her upcoming opponent. What Mayer lacks in power, she makes up for it in defense, footwork, accuracy and work rate. Mayer is the more complete boxer and should be able to win this fight by unanimous decision.
