The Tulsa Golden Hurricane open the 2013 season on the road at the Bowling Green Falcons.
Tulsa comes in to the year fresh off a Liberty Bowl win over Iowa State combined with the CUSA title when they edged out a strong Central Florida by a 23-21 count. With seven starters back on offense and just three back on defense, the Golden Hurricane might be more dependent on scoring points this season. The weapons to put points on the board are certainly in place with Cody Green bringing back nearly 2,600 passing yards, while Trey Watts and Ja'Terian Douglas combined for over 2,000 rushing yards. Tulsa gets back their top three receivers in Keyarris Garrett, Jordan James and Thomas Roberson who caught 137 passes for around 1,900 yards so the #27 ranked offense of 2013 appears to be in good shape. The concern is obviously on a defense that was #25 nationally a year ago but will be missing plenty of production in what will be something we'll have to wait and see how this unit performs.

If experience counts for any thing, Bowling Green is in an envious position with 19 players back. With virtually the entire offense returning, that has to be good news, because the Falcons simply did not move the ball consistently in 2013 at 365 yards and 22 points per game. Plain vanilla is how I would describe this offense with Matt Schilz throwing for almost 2,600 yards but he has a full compliment of receivers back in the fold. Anthon Samuel led BGSU with 998 yards on the ground on 202 carries, but the key for this unit will be whether Schilz makes plays as his 14-12 TD/INT ratio has to improve. Assuming nothing at all changes offensively, the above average defense with nine players back will have to shoulder the load once again. This was the #6 unit in the country that gave up 297 yards and and less than 17 points and was equally tough to throw or run on and hopefully don't have to carry the entire load.
Bowling Green has a decided advantage in experience but struggled to score a year ago with the same team back. Tulsa has talent and experience offensively but not on defense so this might favor the Falcons. First game of the year and I'm tempted by the home team but will try the points...
