The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Ole Miss Rebels face off on Thursday Night for an opening night SEC college football matchup.
The Vanderbilt Commodores were a competitive team a year ago and they are no longer doormats but James Franklin’s team has had some off of the field troubles that could come back to bite them. QB Austyn Carta-Samuels started a game last season but it was against Presbyterian regardless he played in a total of six games last season. Wesley Tate takes over a tailback but it should be running back by committee with Jerron Seymour and Brian Kimbrow. Jordan Mathews is probably one of the more underrated receivers in the nation after catching 94 passes for 1.323 yeards and 8 touchdowns last season but Chris Boyd is suspended so his spot could go to Trey Wilkins or possibly one of the freshaman the tallest of which is Carlos Burse which makes some sense after losing the 6’4 Boyd. Vandy returns a lot on defense including most of their top tackles such as Kenny Ladler, Chase Garnham, and Javan Marshall including their top two sack guys with Garnham and Kyle Woestmann. Vanderbilt never seems to get a lot of respect off of the field but they always seem to earn a lot of respect on the field.

While the Ole Miss Rebels have a home date on September 7th with FCS SE Missouri State, it’s on the road at Texas, Alabama, and Auburn before returning home to play Texas A&M and LSU; in other words Mississippi has a brutal schedule. Last year head Coach Hugh Freeze was a guy few knew much about, this year most will realize he is a good one. QB Bo Wallace will have expectations of him this year as well and Barry Brunetti has looked good in the backup role in practice. When it comes to offensive playmakers, the Rebels have no shortage with Jeff Scott who can simply do it all and on his best days can even carry the team. Wide receiver Donte Montcrief is due for a breakout year and JaMes Logan is no slouch either. Senior Charles Sawyer anchors the secondary, which playing in the SEC is going to be tested while linebacker Serderius Bryant and safety Cody Prewitt played well in the inter-squad scrimmage. The Rebels also landed top recruit defensive end Robert Nkemdiche who has Jadeveon Clowney type hype and the Rebels hope close to Clowney’s talent.
Vanderbilt is 6-0 against the spread in their last six games, 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 SEC games, and 12-3 against the spread in their last 15 home games. Ole Miss is 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games, 8-2 in their last 10 games, and 6-2 against the spread in their last eight SEC games. Vanderbilt has covered the spread in 10 of the last 12 meetings of these two.
The total in this one is set at 53.5 and that is to the high side for an early season game, a SEC game, and a game between these two so any way you slice it I like the Under and that is my free pick. I have a strong play on who will cover the spread and I will post that winning pick in the Premium Area.
