The Rutgers Scarlet Knights head to Bulldog Stadium to face the Fresno State Bulldogs in the 2013 opener for both teams.
To me Rutgers is a bit of an unknown which actually describes their offense perfectly in my view. The reason I say this is you never know what this unit is going to do and that puts a load of pressure on the defensive side of the football which held up well in 2013 as the #10 unit in the land, with only 314 yards and 14 points allowed. Those numbers could be difficult to duplicate with seven starters gone including a few All Big East performers. That could be a huge problem with a weak offense that lost five starters, although quarterback Gary Nova (2695 yards) has his top receiver back in Brandon Coleman who caught 43 balls for 718 yards and a whopping 16.7 yard average. Savon Huggins is the top returning runner (119-410) but his 3.7 ypc left a lot to be desired.

Fresno State put together some amazing numbers on both sides of the ball a season ago and with 15 players back the potential for a repeat performance is not out of the question. Ironically 2013 ended on a down note when SMU domminated them in all phases of a 43-10 decision in the Hawaii Bowl. The offense lost work horse back Robbie Rouse and his 1,490 yards but the cupboard is far from bare with Derek Carr throwing for over 4,100 yards with 37 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His top two options are back as well in Davante Adams (102-1312) and Isaiah Burse (57-851) so moving the football and finding the end zone should not be a concern. The Bulldogs defense was often over shadowed by their flashy offense, but not by opponents who averaged just 339 yards and 24 points although three of their top four tacklers have graduated.
On paper it looks like Fresno State has a big talent edge but having said that, you could make that claim quite a bit with a Rutgers team that is devoid of flash. If the Scarlet Knights are to have any chance the scoreboard has to be controlled and honestly I don't know if that's possible here...
