The 1-0 Houston Cougars hit the road for their first AAC conference game as they visit Lincoln Financial Field to face the 0-1 Temple Owls.
Houston got the 2013 season started off on a good note as they made easy work of Southern 62-13. The Cougars struck early and built a 27-0 nothing lead before yielding their first points. Houston was able to rely heavily on their running game in this contest and the coaching staff was pleasantly surprised with the play of running back Ryan Jackson who rushed for 120 yards and 2 TDs. The Cougars were left with a big hole at the tailback position after the transfer of stud RB Charlie Sims and Jackson showed early that he is up to the task rushing for two TD's before the break. Backups Farrow and Hicks combined for an additional 150 yards as well. At QB, the Cougars split snaps but David Piland had the better outing throwing f 148 yards and a TD on 15-23 passing. The Cougars forced 3 turnovers as well and outgained Southern by over 300 yards.

Temple returns home after a 28-6 loss on the road in defeat at Notre Dame. The Owls offensive struggles from last season carried over to this one and the Owls were not able to get production outside of quarterback Connor Reilly. Reilly's debut was solid as he rushed for 65 yards and threw for 228 but was unable to get the Owls offense into the end zone. Temple should be able to get a little more going against a Houston defense that is much less stout up front. The Temple defense struggled to get off the field all day and yielded 542 yards of total offense to Tommy Rees and the Irish. Temple was strong with the ball all game and only had one turnover but were unable to create any of their own.
Temple should see a better showing on offense this week with a Houston defense that is vulnerable to the big play. I like Reilly to get the Owls in the end zone a few times but the Cougars to be too much to contain both on the ground and through the air as the game wears on. Look for Piland to have a big day and Ryan Jackson to have another big contest as the Cougars pull away by 10 late in the game.
