The Minnesota Golden Gophers head to New Mexico State on Saturday to face off against the New Mexico Aggies.
The New Mexico Aggies will be looking for their first win of the season on Saturday as the Aggies host the Gophers. New Mexico State took a beating in their season opener, falling to the Longhorns 56-7. NMSU got off to an early lead against the Longhorns as Texas turned the ball over a couple of times and looked to struggle against the Aggies. New Mexico State had the lead late in the first half, but Texas QB David Ash found his rhythm in this new offense for the Longhorns and proceeded to light up the Aggie to the tune of 343 yards and four scores. Once the Longhorn offense got rolling, there wasn’t much the Aggie could do to slow them down as the Aggies allowed 715 yards of total offense to the Longhorns on the night. New Mexico State did some nice things offensively, putting up 346 yards against a solid Texas defense, but turnovers killed them, and when playing a team as talented as the Longhorns, you can’t make many mistakes.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers started their season off right, defeating the UNLV Rebels 51-23 on Thursday night. This is one of those games where the score doesn’t tell the whole tale. The Gophers took advantage of UNLV miscues on the night and were able to turn those mistakes into instant points. The player of the night for the Gophers was their QB Phillip Nelson, and if the opening game is any indication, it looks like a lot of the Gopher offense will be on Nelson’s shoulders going forward. Nelson threw for 99 yards and a score, while also leading the Gophers on the ground with 83 yards and two scores, including one scamper of 48 yards against the Rebels. The Gophers are a team that needs to play nearly perfect ball offensively, and while there is some talent around, this team just cannot afford mistakes. The Rebels actually out gained the Gophers on the night 419 -320 and only trailed by a FG at the break. The two scores in the third quarter for the Gophers were on a 98 yard kick return to open the half, and then a few minutes later Martez Shabazz returned a blocked kick for a score. Follow that up with a pick six by Calhoun, and you can see how this game could have went a lot differently than it did.
Not much line movement here with the number opening at -17 for the Gophers, and it has since dropped to -16.5
I have to take the Gophers here. I hate laying this big of a number, especially on the road early in the year. The Aggies are just that bad. New Mexico State is in a realistic battle with the Georgia State’s and Idaho’s of the world for the worst FBS team this season, and while the Gophers are far from world beaters I look for Minnesota to head into town and dispatch of the Aggies easily here on Saturday.
