The San Jose State Spartans will have their hands full on Saturday when the Spartans head to Stanford Stadium to face the Cardinal.
The Stanford Cardinal have taken their identity formed by now 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and ran with it. The Cardinal are a smash mouthed, pro-style team that will just plain out physical you all day long. Stanford has one of the more interesting quarterbacks in the Pac-12 in Kevin Hogan. I really like Hogan as he makes great decisions, and is athletic enough to get out of trouble. Hogan has had some accuracy issues in the past, but his ability to put his team in a great position, and make sound decisions can trump that. The ground game will once again be solid for the Cardinal behind what could be the bets offensive line in the Country. Defensively the Cardinal are also solid, with their stout defensive line leading the way.

The San Jose State Spartans started off their season with a win last weekend as the Spartans defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 24-0. Sure, Sacramento State may not be quite on the same level as the Cardinal, but a win is a win, and a shutout is a shutout. The Spartans put up solid numbers, out gaining the Hornets 367-278, while also forcing two turnovers. The Spartans were balanced against the Hornets, gaining 225 through the air and 142 on the ground. David Fales was once again under center for SJSU, and while Fales’ stat line isn’t incredibly impressive it is efficient enough to get it done (at least against Sacramento State). Jason Simpson had a tremendous day on the ground for the Spartans, rushing for 135 yards and a score on 21 carries.
The line has been steadily climbing on this one. The Cardinal opened up at -22 in most books, and now I’ve seen the number as high as -26.5.
The Spartans will need to put their big boy pants on for this one as the Cardinal are one of the most physical teams in the nation. San Jose can do some nice things, but the Spartans are completely outmatched here. Stanford has had plenty of time to prepare, and with a game against Army the following week, there is little chance the Cardinal are looking past the Spartans. The Cardinal don’t necessarily run up the score on a lot of teams, but it shouldn’t matter here as Stanford could name the score if they want, and should easily win by four or more scores on Saturday night at home.
