The Syracuse Orange and Northwestern Wildcats play on Saturday afternoon in week two of the 2013 college football season.
The Syracuse Orange lost their season opener against Penn State 23-17 on Saturday. The Orange gained just 260 total yards against the Nittany Lions defense, 71 yards on the ground. QB Allen completed 17 of 37 passes for 189 yards and threw two interceptions. RB Smith rushed for 73 yards and two touchdowns for the Orange. The offense was not great in this game, considering they couldn’t convert on 3rd down and turned the ball over three times. The Syracuse defense played well, forcing 4 turnovers, while giving up 353 yards of total offense. The Orange did a great job getting off the field on 3rd down, as Penn State converted 4 of 20 3rd down conversions. Syracuse held the Nittany Lions to 57 yards rushing in the contest. Syracuse’s defense will have to play at this level again against Northwestern, who has a great offense. Offensively, Syracuse will have to get better play out of their quarterback, Allen, or they won’t be able to keep up with the Wildcats.

The Northwestern Wildcats went out west to California and defeated the Golden Bears 44-30 on Saturday night. This game featured a ton of offense, as both teams produced over 500 total offensively. Northwestern produced 508 yards of total offense, 299 passing and 209 rushing. QB Siemlan completed 18 of 29 passes for 276 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. RB Green played great, rushing for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns. WR Vitale caught 5 balls for 101 yards, while WR Jones grabbed 5 balls for 94 yards. The Wildcats defense allowed 455 yards passing and only 93 rushing on Saturday night. Northwestern forced 3 turnovers and did a good job getting off the field on 3rd down. Northwestern will have to play solid against the run again this weekend and try to force Syracuse into throwing the ball. Northwestern showed they are a tough team to go out west and beat a quality Golden Bears team. The Wildcats will head home and have the luxury of playing in front of there home crowd for this matchup.
Syracuse has a solid defense and a good rushing attack, but their passing game is limited with Allen at the helm. Northwestern has a balanced offensive attack and a great rushing defense, but the secondary is inconsistent. If Northwestern can shut down the Syracuse rushing attack, the Orange will have to rely on the passing game, which isn’t great. Northwestern should be able to put up points and I don’t think Syracuse can keep up. I’m rolling with the Wildcats to win by two touchdowns at home.
