The Iowa Hawkeyes leave the friendly confines of Iowa City and head to Ames on Saturday to face off against the Cyclones at Jack Trice Stadium.
The Iowa State Cyclones are off to a rough start this year as the Cyclones fell in their season opener to their rival UNI. The Cyclones were defeated by the FCS UNI Panthers on opening weekend 28-20. The ‘Clones were able to put up some decent yardage against the Panthers on the day, tallying at total of 410 yards of offense. Sophomore quarterback Sam Richardson was under center for the Cyclones, and Richardson was solid on the day, throwing for 242 yards and a pair of scores. Richardson was also the Cyclones leading rusher against the Panthers, gaining 74 yards on 21 carries. The Cyclone defense had all kinds of problems stopping the Panthers attack however. UNI managed to out gain the Cyclones, putting up 457 yards of offense on the day.

The Iowa Hawkeyes had their hands full on Saturday, in a game that many expected the Hawkeyes to cruise through. Iowa defeated Missouri State by the score 28-14, but it was a bit closer than that as Missouri State closed it to within seven in the early moments of the fourth quarter after an interception return. Offensively the Hawkeyes moved the ball well against the Bears, gaining 489 yards of offense. Freshman quarterback Jake Rudock was better in his second start, but make no mistake this is an offense that wants to ground and pound you. The Hawkeyes defense was outstanding on the day. The Bears managed just 197 yards of offense against the Hawkeyes, while turning the ball over twice to Iowa.
The Hawkeyes opened up at -2.5 in most offshore books, but not too long after opening the line quickly moved down to -1.5 for Iowa, indicating some early action on the ‘Clones.
The Hawkeyes have struggled on the road lately, going just 2-7 overall in their last nine games, and also going just 2-7 ATS in that span. The Cyclones aren’t great at home, but Iowa State is a respectable 7-7 overall at Jack Trice in their last three seasons, while going 5-8 ATS.
I have to give the edge here to the Hawkeyes. The Iowa Hawkeyes have the better line play, defense and overall ground game. I am concerned about Rudock on the road for the first time, especially in a rivalry game, but Ferentz will do his best to make sure his quarterback is working within himself. I’m looking at the under here as well as the defense for Iowa should contain the Cyclones, and this definitely isn’t a Hawkeye team that will light up the board. If you are thinking of parlaying this one I would take the under as well, but for my free pick I’m backing the Hawkeyes over the Cyclones.
