The UTEP Miners visit Aggie Memorial Stadium to square off with the New Nexico State Aggies.
Texas El Paso fell to visiting New Mexico by a 42-35 count in overtime to open the season on a down note. This was some what typical of what we have seen from this team in the past with a supposed edge as a touchdown favorite only to lose straight up. The offense can't be blamed for this one with the unit totaling 400 yards with Jameill Showers (15-20/119) short ball control passing game producing well. The Miners made their living on the ground with 280 yards overall and over six yard average with Aaron Jones enjoying an eleven carry, 127 yard day with a pair of TD's. Nathan Jeffry and Showers combined for another 103 yards but that wasn't enough for a defense that was rocked for 483 yards with the Lobos almost rushing for 400.

Over the years New Mexico State has been struggling on both sides of the ball which simply means that points have been hard to come by while opposing attacks have had little problem scoring. That sounds like what happened in week two when Minnesota came to town and rolled up 469 yards in a 44-21 victory. The Gophers ripped off over 342 yards on the ground and averaged eight yards per touch while the Aggies managed just 356 yards and 2.5 yards per carry on 40 tries as the front seven of the Golden Gophers owned the line of scrimmage. Andrew McDonald had some success through the air, completing 22-331 for 186 yards but the Aggies couldn't move the chains and keep the ball away from Minnesota's ground attack.
I would give the edge to UTEP who will try to pound the ball on the ground much the way Minnesota did and they should have (I said should) success. That leaves the Miners defense to do something which is a guess. My pick is UTEP but this is a frustrating group to predict...
