The North Carolina Tar Heels travel to Georgia Tech to play the Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon.
The Tar Heels of North Carolina had last week off and are 1-1 after beating Middle Tennessee State two weeks ago. North Carolina lost to South Carolina in the season opener, as the Gamecocks defense didn’t not allow the Tar Heels offense to get going after South Carolina took an early lead in the game. Against Middle Tennessee State, the Tar Heels produced 511 total yards of offense, with 377 of them coming thru the air. QB Bryn Renner threw for 339 yards and a touchdown for the Tar Heels, who scored the first 23 points and never let the Blue Raiders get closer than 13 points after halftime. WR Tapley had 4 catches for 93 yards and WR McNeill had 2 catches for 75 yards. The running game was led by RB Morris and RB Blue, who each carried the ball 10 times for a combined 90 yards. The Tar Heel defense allowed the Blue Raiders to gain 401 total yards, with 158 of them coming on the ground. North Carolina was able to force Middle Tennessee into 4 turnovers and they only converted 8 of 18 3rd down opportunities. The Tar Heel defense will have their hands full against the run this week, as Georgia Tech may have one of the best rushing attacks in the country. North Carolina will also have to play well on the road in a hostile environment.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are coming off an impressive win, improving to 2-0 after beating Duke on the road, 38-14, on Saturday. QB Vad Lee threw for a career-high four touchdown passes and ran for another in his hometown. Lee was the state’s 2010 AP high school player of the year at Durham Hillside High. Lee finished 8 of 16 for 125 yards and added 76 yards rushing. Georgia Tech rolled up 344 yards rushing and 469 total yards against an improved Duke defense. Senior RB God high had a great game as well; rushing for 79 yards on only 4 carries, while also catching 4 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. The Yellow Jackets picked up 28 first downs and dominated time of possession in the win. The Georgia defense looks improved from last year as they held the Blue Devils offense to 254 total yards on Saturday. The Duke offense was only the field for 21 minutes and converted only 3 of 14 3rd down conversions. The Yellow Jacket defense will have to play well at home against Renner and the Tar Hell offense this week. Georgia Tech should be able to run the ball effectively with an experienced offensive line, Lee, and their senior running backs.
The Tar Heels are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Yellow Jackets are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 conference games. The Tar Heels are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 meetings. The over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in Georgia Tech.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have won the last 4 meetings between these two schools. The game last year was a shoot out and that may be the case in this one too. However, I think the Georgia Tech defense has improved and will be the difference in this game. Furthermore, North Carolina will have trouble stopping the Yellow Jacket rushing attack and that will limit the amount of possessions the Tar Heels get on offense. Georgia Tech will win the battle in the trenches and will win this game by at least a touchdown.
