The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles visit the blue turf of the Boise State Broncos.
Southern Mississippi was a top 25 team a few short years ago before graduation nearly wiped the roster clean. The Golden Eagles are definitely in a rebuilding mode still and it's hard to disagree with that assessment after a 24-3 loss at Arkansas has the team looking at 0-3. The defense didn't play badly with 327 yards allowed but their was no room for error with the offensive side of the football totaling 254 yards and giving the ball away twice. Jalen Richard was a viable option on the ground with a 13 carry, 94 yard effort but Allen Bridgford struggled to connect with receivers down field. Bridgford hit 17-33 for 133 yards and a pair of interceptions with most of his completions less then ten yards.

I think we all know that this isn't the same Boise State that has been a threat to the National Championship for years but that doesn't mean the cupboard is bare. The Broncos took a highly regarded Fresno State Club to the wire before falling 41-40 which left the Broncos with a seldom seen 2-2 mark after four games. This was nothing but an old fashioned shoot out with the Broncos leading in total yards 561-522 with the Bulldogs amassing 460 passing yards behind David Carr. The Broncos were balanced with Aaron Baltazar leading the rushing attack with 92 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Joe Southwick (31-45/313) also had a big game in the air Geraldo Boldewijn and Matt Miller combining for nearly 200 yards in receptions but at the final gun it was the inability to stop Carr that was the difference.
I don't know what the mental state of Boise looks like but getting Southern Mississippi at home should help. It's still a big number to cover but for me it's the Broncos or nothing...
