The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head out to BYU to play the Cougars on Saturday evening.
Georgia Tech lost their second straight game of the season after falling to Miami 45-30 on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets started off the season 3-0 before dropping a game to Virginia Tech at home and then to the Hurricanes in Miami on Saturday. Georgia Tech produced 401 yards against Miami with 335 coming on the ground. QB Vad Lee only threw 13 passes for 63 yards and an interception. RB Sims and RB Hill combined for 19 carries for 124 yards for the Yellow Jackets. Lee has thrown for 625 yards and 7 touchdowns this year, while also rushing for 241 yards and 3 scores for the Yellow Jackets. Sims has rushed for 325 yards and 6 touchdowns this season, while WR Smelter has caught 11 balls for 185 yards and two touchdowns. The Georgia Tech defense played awful, allowing 551 yards against a balanced Miami attack. The Jackets forced 4 turnovers in the game, but turned it over 3 times themselves. Overall this season, Georgia Tech ranks 25th in points allowed with 19 per game and 41st in points scored with 35 a game. The Yellow Jackets rank 115th in passing yards per game, but 7th in rushing yards with 300 per game. Georgia Tech will face a stingy BYU defense this weekend that has had experience against the triple-option attack. The Yellow Jackets need QB Lee to make some plays with his arm or they will become one-dimensional against a solid defensive unit.

The BYU Cougars improved to 3-2 on the season after beating Utah State on the road 31-14 last week. BYU has faced a tough schedule early on this season and earned a big win at home against Texas in their second game of the season. In the win over Utah State, BYU produced 438 yards of offense, but turned the ball over twice. QB Taysom Hill completed 17 of 31 passes for 278 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. RB Jamaal Williams rushed for 79 yards on 14 carries, while WR Mathews caught 5 balls for 112 yards and 3 scores. Hill has thrown for 1,019 yards this season and 4 touchdowns, while also rushing for 579 yards and 6 scores. WR Mathews and WR Hoffman have combined for 26 grabs and 446 yards with 3 touchdowns this season. RB Williams had added 457 yards on the ground for the Cougars this season. The BYU defense held Utah State to only 14 points and 397 total yards in the win, 186 of which came on the ground. The Cougars rank 18th in points allowed with 16 per game and 80th in points scored with 27 per contest. BYU has the 13th ranked rushing attack, gaining 277 yards per game, and the 95th ranked passing attack at 203 yards per game. Moving forward, BYU will have to find a way to stop the Georgia Tech triple-option attack if they want to earn a victory at home this Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. BYU is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against the ACC. The under is 7-2 in Georgia Tech’s last 9 games overall. The under is 7-3 n BYU’s last 10 home games.
These two teams met last year at Georgia Tech and BYU destroyed the Yellow Jackets 41-17.BYU has proven that they can stop the triple-option rushing attack in the past and I think they will prove it again on Saturday. When Georgia Tech can’t run the ball effectively, they become one-dimensional and find themselves relying on QB Lee, who is too inconsistent throwing the ball. BYU has a balanced attach offensively and I think they will score enough points to earn the win and the cover in what should be a low scoring battle out west.
