The Miami (Ohio) Redhawks and Fred Yager Stadium host the Akron Zips in MAC Action Saturday.
I would have to say that Akron looks improved over previous seasons but their 1-6 record says I'm a liar. The Zips do give opponents fits but not on a weekly basis which says consistency is enemy number one. Northern Illinois certainly had their hands full in a 27-20 victory that dropped Akron to 0-3 in the conference in a game that was actually fairly even with NIU holding a 399-372 yardage advantage. What the offense needed was more punch on the ground with Jawon Chisholm leading with 70 yards on 20 totes with team totaling 110 yards and averaging just three yards per try. Kyle Pohl (24-56/262) did move the chains at times through the air with a touchdown and pick but misfired on some throws. The defense held Jordan Lynch and the Huskies to under 400 yards which was a winnable performance in my book.

Miami (Ohio) sits at 0-6 after a 17-10 defeat at Massachusetts in what appeared to be a good spot to pick up their first win of the 2013 campaign. However, a struggling offense continued to have issues moving the ball and the defense couldn't hold the fort. The Minutmen defense was the story of this one as the Redhawks mustered just 290 yards and had problems mounting anything on the ground or air. Dawan Scott was the only runner of note with a five carry, 55 yard afternoon with the team totaling 110 yards. Austin Boucher had consistency issues with receivers dropping balls of simply missing them when they were open as he completed 14-34 for 166 yards and a touchdown with three killer interceptions with a few squandering scoring chances.
Akron has the better numbers here but laying a touchdown on the road just seems wrong. It also seems like the right play if the Zips play as capable so for now that's how I'm going...
