UAB Blazers (2-4) at UTSA Roadrunners (2-5)

The Line: UTSA Roadrunners -3.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

The Alamodome and the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners host CUSA rival the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers Saturday.

I know Phil Steele had tabbed Alabama-Birmingham as one of the teams on his most improved list although at 2-4 I don't know if he still has those same thoughts. The scoring has been competitive but the defense has struggled until coming through in a 27-24 victory over Florida International as a seven point favorite. Both teams totaled around 400 yards of offense with some balance between the run and pass. The Blazers ran for 217 yards and averaged just under 5 1/2 yards per touch with Jordan Howard leading the way with 159 yards on 20 carries. The air game of Austin Brown was a bit touch and go as he completed 19-30 for a touchdown and zero interceptions as he engineered a two minute drive that resulted in a 27 yard Ty Long field goal to win it with ten seconds left.

Ivan Pierre Aguirre-USA TODAY Sp

Texas-San Antonio moves the ball well enough at 406 yards but averages 23 points which is not enough to be competitive on a weekly basis. The Roadrunners almost got the job done in a 27-21 defeat to Rice but once again the points were at a premium and the defense couldn't hold the fort. The Owls led 27-7 before withstanding a 14-0 fourth quarter by UTSA. The Roadrunners more then held their own with an impressive 264 rushing yards with nearly a 5 1/2 yard average. David Glasco ad Eric Soza were a nice one, two punch on the ground with a combined 163 yards on 31 carries with three trips to the end zone. Soza did misfire on some throws in the air attack where he went 17-31 for 170 yards with 12 players recording receptions but the bottom line was the team ran out of gas after trailing by 20 points.

This might be an interesting game but betting it might be an unnecessary risk in my view with UTSA needing to score some and help their defense. I'll back them but that doesn't mean I'll bet them...
