The Illinois Fighting Illini have their hands full on Saturday as the Illini head to Beaver Stadium on Saturday to face the Nittany Lions.
The Penn State Nittany Lions are coming off a 63-14 beat down, at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes have been lacking that stylish victory that could move them up the polls, and it looks like the Nittany Lions were the victims of that win for OSU. The Nittany Lions managed 357 yards of total offense against the Buckeyes on the day, but the PSU defense had no answer for the Buckeye attack, allowing 686 yards to OSU. The Nittany Lions phenom quarterback Hackenberg received a rude awakening in this game, throwing two picks against the Buckeyes, and completing just 12/23 for 112 yards, giving Hackenberg a QBR on the day of 12.1. The Nittany Lion defense did nothing to help the struggling offense as Penn State surrendered 408 yards on the ground to the Buckeyes, and 278 yards through the air.

The Illinois Fighting Illini ran into the Michigan State defense this past weekend, and as we’ve seen all season long, that usually means a long, physical day. The Illini fell to the Spartans 42-3 on Saturday, on their home field at Memorial Stadium. Illinois had just a measly 128 yards of offense against the Spartans on the day, turning it over twice against MSU. The Illini’s passing attack with Scheelhaase under center was non-existent practically, as the signal caller completed 13/21 for 103 yards and a pick. The ground game wasn’t any better, managing just 25 yards on 21 attempts. Defensively the Illini got ran over by a Spartan offense that has struggled all season long as MSU rushed for 269 yards, and threw for another 208 against Illinois on the day.
Illinois is just 4-12 against the spread in their last 16 games, and just 3-13 overall in their last 16. The Nittany Lions are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games, and Penn State is 4-1 overall in their last five games against the Illini.
I have to go with the Nittany Lions in this spot. Not only are the Nittany Lions the better team here, the Illini come banged up on the defensive line, and facing a solid running team like the Nittany Lions is not a good situation for them to be in. I don’t love this line, as I’d like it to be in the single digits, but as long as it stays under two touchdowns, I’ll back the Nittany Lions at home against Scheelhaase and the Illini.
