The 4-3 Rutgers Scarlet Knights welcome the 1-7 Temple Owls to town for AAC action Saturday afternoon at noon.
Rutgers is coming off their most embarrassing loss in quite some time after the Houston Cougars dominated the Scarlet Knights 49-14 this past Saturday afternoon. After Justin Goodwin tied the game at 14 mid way through the second quarter, the Cougars managed to reel off 35 straight points, running away with the road win. Chas Dodd got handed the keys to the offense after Gary Nova threw three interceptions -- which totals 7 in his past two games. Dodd did not fair much better, throwing for 78 yards and a pick of his own. Goodwin was strong on the ground with 161 and two TD’s to lead all rushers. On D, the Scarlet Knights were absolutely torched in the secondary, giving up 400 yards to the Houston passing attack and touchdown passes of 26 and 83 yards. With the poor performance behind them, the Scarlet Knights should be advised not to overlook a Temple team that is coming off their largest offensive output in quite some time.

Temple fell to 1-7 this past weekend as they were on the losing end of a shootout at Southrn Methodist 59-49. Defense was nowhere to be found in this one as the two teams combined for over 1400 yards and 100 points. The Owls jumped out to a 28-7 lead behind Robbie Anderson touchdowns of 42 and 83 yards. Anderson led the way receiving with 239 yards and 2 touchdowns. After tying the game at 42 in the 4th quarter, the Owls let SMU go on a 17-0 run over the next 10 or so minutes that sealed the game. PJ Walker had his best showing of the season throwing for 293 yards and 4 TD’s and running for just under 100 yards and another TD. The Owls should be able to continue to move the ball effectively against a struggling Rutgers defensive unit this weekend.
Some trends to consider -- Rutgers is 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games overall and Temple is 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 November games.
Prior to this past weekends events, Rutgers would have been the easy pick here but as the Rutgers defense continues to regress, the Owls and PJ Walker continue to get more comfortable on offense. I expect Rutgers to run things through Goodwin most of the game given the struggles of their quarterbacks and I expect PJ Walker to continue his strong progression as the Owls make this one interesting and get the cover in a close loss on the road.
