The Syracuse Orange travel to Maryland to play the Terps on Saturday afternoon.
Syracuse improved to 4-4 overall, 2-2 ACC, after beating Wake Forest at home 13-0 last weekend. This was a critical game for the Orange’s postseason hopes. Syracuse has road games against Maryland and Florida State in the next two weeks and finishes the season at home against Pittsburgh and Boston College. Against Wake Forest, Syracuse gained 352 total yards against Wake Forest and did not turn the ball over once. QB Hunt completed 18 of 30 passes for 144 yards. RB Gulley and RB Smith combined for 147 yards rushing on 30 carries. WR Estime led the team in receiving with 9 catches for 62 yards and a touchdown. Syracuse ranks 88th in points scored, averaging just over 25 points per game this season. The game against Wake Forest marked Syracuse’s first league shutout since 1996. The Orange held the Demon Deacons to only 198 total yards and 35 rushing yards in the win. The Orange are allowing just over 25 points per game this season, which ranks 55th in the country. Syracuse will head out on the road where they are 1-2 this season.

Maryland dropped to 5-3 overall, 1-3 ACC, after losing to Clemson 40-27 two weeks ago at home. Maryland started off the year 4-0, but has last three out of their last four games since. The Terps have been plagued with injuries once again, specifically losing their top two receivers for the year a few weeks ago. Against Clemson, the Terps gained 369 total yards with only 82 coming on the ground. QB Rowe completed 20 of 46 passes for 287 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Rowe has been named the starting quarterback over QB Brown because he has a greater ability to throw the football. However, with the absence of his two best receivers it won’t be easy for Rowe to have success over the remainder of the season. RB Reid carried the ball 15 times for 70 yards, while WR Jacobs caught 8 balls for 158 yards with one touchdown in the loss against Clemson. Maryland averages less than 28 points per game, which ranks 74th in the nation. The Maryland defense allowed 540 yards to Clemson, but they did force three turnovers in the loss. The Terps defense is allowing 25.5 points per game, which ranks 57th in the country. Maryland will be at home for this game where they are 4-1 on the season.
Syracuse is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games in November. Maryland is 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following a bye week.
These two schools have not played since 1994. Syracuse loves to run the ball early and often, but they will be up against a tough front seven for Maryland this weekend. The Orange will need to take advantage of a beat up Terps secondary in order to put points on the scoreboard. Maryland is leaning on Rowe to throw the ball and he should have some success against a Syracuse secondary that has given up some big numbers thru the air this season. While I think Maryland will earn the win at home on Saturday, I’ll take the points with Syracuse because I think this game will be close.
