The Michigan State Spartans and their suffocating defense head to Lincoln this weekend to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are sitting at 7-2 this season, following a nice 17-13 win over the Wolverines this past Saturday. This game wasn’t so much what the Huskers did; it was what the Wolverines didn’t. The Wolverines had far more talent on the field than Nebraska, but inept coaching by the Wolverines, as well as some bad quarterback play from Devin Gardner, helped propel the Huskers to a win. Defensively the Huskers blitzed the Michigan Wolverines nearly every snap, and due to the fact that the Wolverines have apparently never been blitzed before, they were caught completely by surprise. Gardner had happy feet in the pocket for Michigan, even when his line gave him plenty of time, forcing many of his pass attempts to soar over the heads of his receivers. The Huskers offense did play decent against the Wolverines, even though Nebraska had under 300 yards of total offense on the day. I like the fight this Husker team has, but playing the Spartans on Saturday will be a huge challenge for them, but at least Nebraska gets a break by playing them at Memorial Stadium.

The Michigan State Spartans head to Nebraska on Saturday to face the Huskers. The Spartans had this past weekend off to rest and prepare for Nebraska, and after watching the Huskers play the Wolverines Saturday, this defensive unit has to be licking their chops. The Spartans defense is ranked 3rd in the nation in points allowed, giving up just 11.6 per outing, and while MSU definitely doesn’t have the most dynamic offense in the world, they are improved. Connor Cook has taken over the quarterback spot for the Spartans, and even though some newbie mistakes are there, overall the kid has played well. The Spartans are not a team that will try and air it out however, as the Spartans want to try and control things on the ground. This could be an advantage as the Huskers have struggled all year long against the run. Nebraska played Michigan well on the ground this past weekend, but again, that was more due to the lack of effective play calling and scheme on the part of the Wolverine coaching staff.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are 5-4 against the spread this season, and at home, the Huskers are 3-3 against the number. As an underdog the past three seasons, the Huskers have been a fade, as Nebraska is just 2-6 against the spread as a dog. This year however, when an underdog of 3.5-10 points, the Huskers are 1-0 against the spread (last week against Michigan)
The Michigan State Spartans are 5-3 against the spread this season, and as a road favorite, the Spartans are 1-0 ATS on the year. In road games overall this year, the Spartans are 2-0 against the spread.
Have to take the Spartans here. The Huskers got the win against Michigan this past week, but the Spartans have had an extra week to prepare for Nebraska, and if this offense struggled against the Wolverines, they should really struggle against the Spartans.
Nebraska and their home field will likely keep it close for awhile, but look for MSU to pull away late, winning by double digits over the Huskers on Saturday in Lincoln.
