The East Carolina Pirates and the North Carolina State Wolfpack play on Saturday afternoon.
East Carolina improved to 8-2 overall, 6-1 C-USA, after blowing out UAB 63-14 last weekend. The Pirates produced 625 yards on offense, but turned the ball over twice. QB Shane Carden threw for five touchdowns to lead East Carolina to their fourth straight victory. Carden was 20 of 30 for 296 yards. His favorite target was Reese Wiggins who had five catches for 142 yards and three touchdowns, while WR Justin Hardy chipped in with 5 catches for 47 yards and 1 touchdown. Carden has thrown for 3,320 yards and 29 touchdowns this season. Hardy leads the team with 87 catches for 1,047 yards and 7 touchdowns this year. The running game was even more impressive as RB Breon Allen and Vintavious Cooper each rushed for over 100 yards. East Carolina averages over 41 points per game, which ranks 11th in the country this season. The defense allowed 354 yards against UAB, but some of that came in the second half when East Carolina was up by a wide margin. The Pirates are allowing an average of 21.5 points per game, which ranks 25th in the country this year. East Carolina will hit the road for this weekend’s game; the Pirates are 3-1 on the road this season.

North Carolina State dropped to 3-7 on the year, 0-7 in ACC play, after losing at Boston College 38-21 last weekend. The Wolfpack are a mess right now and have lost 6 straight games after starting off 3-1. Against Boston College, the Wolfpack produced only 360 total yards and turned the ball over once in the loss. QB Pete Thomas completed 22 of 33 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown. Thomas started in place of Brandon Mitchell, who had been listed as questionable with an undisclosed injury. WR Jumichael Ramos caught five passes for 109 yards and a 52-yard touchdown for the Wolfpack. Thomas has thrown for over 1,600 yards with 4 touchdowns this season, while RB Thornton leads the team in rushing with 606 yards and 4 touchdowns. Overall, the offense ranks 98th in the country this year, averaging just over 22 points per game. Defensively, NC State gave up 473 yards to Boston College, but was able to force one turnover. The Wolfpack had no answer for the Eagles rushing attack and it was the second game in a row that NC State gave up 38 points. The Wolfpack defense ranks 73rd in the country in points allowed, giving up less than 28 points per game this season.
We have a matchup of two teams that are headed in opposite direction. NC State is struggling to stop people of defense and find a way to put points on the board offensively. Meanwhile, ECU is dominating the competition in C-USA and is two wins away from reaching a 10-win season. The only thing that scares me about this game for the Pirates is the fact that they have a big game on deck with Marshall. However, I think this team will remain focused and earn a win on the road against the Wolfpack, a team that has already lost three games at home this season. The Pirates win this game by at least a touchdown.
