The 4-5 Southern Methodist Mustangs tangle with the 2-7 South Florida Bulls this Saturday at Raymond James Stadium.
With their post-season hopes fading by the week, SMU hopes to make a final push towards bowl eligibility this weekend. SMU got back on track this past weekend with a dominant win at home over lowly UConn 38-21. Garrett Gilbert was in his usual form throwing for 353 yards and 4 TD’s for a Mustang offense that tallied 460 total yards. Keenan Holman and Jeremy Johnson each scored 2 TD’s a piece and Der’rikk Thompson hauled in a game high 113 yards. After a UConn TD cut the score to 28-21, an SMU FG and a 35 yard Stephon Sanders interception touchdown put the game on ice for a SMU win at home. With the win, the Mustangs remain 2 wins shy of bowl eligibility with two games remaining.

South Florida’s early season struggles have begun to take shape once again as the Bulls have lost three games in a row and failed to be competitive in all three. This past weekend, the Bulls let a Memphis team that has struggled on the road this year come into town and get a 23-10 win. The Bulls relied heavily on their defense in this one as the unit yielded just 6 points through three quarters before Memphis reeled off 17 in the fourth for the comfy win. Memphis managed 17 points in a 3 minute span that sealed the game. Quarterback Mike White threw for 198 yards and 4 TD’s before connecting with Andre Davis for a 31 yard strike in the final minute. With their bowl hopes long gone, the Bulls will look to build for the future as they showcase some young talent this weekend and evaluate for next year.
Some trends to consider -- SMU is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 conference games and USF is 7-18-1 against the spread in their last 26 games against the spread on grass.
Safe to say the Bulls are in full on shutdown mode and while their defense was somewhat impressive against Memphis, the SMU offense is far more talented and explosive and should have their way with USF’s D as the game goes on. I expect Garrett Gilbert to throw for 300+ once again and the SMU wide receiver corps to easily have their way USF’s secondary as the Mustangs get the 10+ point win and road cover.
