The Alabama-Birmingham Blazers welcome the Southern Miss Golden Eagles to Legion Field.
The Southern Mississippi squad that terrorized the CUSA a few short years ago is in rebuilding mode the last few seasons which has meant a struggling offense and defense with wins scarce. The Golden Eagles did put up a few points versus visiting Middle Tennessee State in week 13 the defensive side couldn't hold up in a 42-21 defeat to drop to 0-11. No upset here with the Blue Raiders totaling 418 yards and allowing 371 yards. USM ran the ball well enough when they tried with Jalen Richard and Kendrick Hardy combining for 122 yards on 22 carries. Nick Mullens threw for 287 yards and all three touchdowns but two interceptions were killers.

When looking at Alabama-Birmingham I am tempted to say this team is also rebuilding but I think it's more a matter that the talent level has to improve especially on the defensive side of things where opponents have averaged 42 points. UAB had a golden opportunity to shock the CUSA in week 13 versus Rice but it was not to be with the Owls taking a 37-34 overtime decision. The Owls dominated total yardage 467-333 with 328 yards coming on the ground. The Blazers struggled to establish the run with Jonathan Perry needing 16 carries to gain 60 yards. Perry tried to rally the troops through the air with a 13-25 performance resulting in 195 yards and a touchdown with Jamarcus Nelson snagging five balls for 127 yards.
Oh boy...Alabama-Birmingham as a two touchdown favorite makes me laugh and cry at the same time. I don't think the Blazers should be this big of a favorite to anybody so spend your money how you wish...
