The Rutgers Scarlett Knights and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish face off on Saturday In the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
The Rutgers Scarlett Knights won their final game of the season over South Florida to get their sixth win and become bowl eligible but it has been a rough season for the RU. Rutgers started the season with one point loss against Fresno State and it went downhill from there. The Scarlet Knights lost five of their last seven games and in most of those games, particularly against the bowl teams they just weren’t competitive. Chas Dodd is serviceable at QB at best as to throw high percentage short passes to be effective as it was Gary Nova at QB the bulk of the season Paul James has some ability at running back with 866 yards and nine touchdowns but it can be tough to tell as Rutgers has played from behind often this year. Tyler Croft and Brandon Coleman are Rutgers leading receivers. Steve Longs has 11 tackles and Kevin Snyder has 89 tackles. Rutgers gains 375.9 yards per game and their opponents gain 406. The real issue for Rutgers has been 18 interceptions and it is tough to win when you turn the ball over.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish weren’t expected to make it back to the National Championship but while they had a few disappointments, overall they had some nice wins against some very good teams. While ND lost to Pitt and never looked competitive against Oklahoma, the Irish has wins over Arizona State, USC, and Michigan State on a schedule that featured nine bowl teams. Tommy Rees threw for nearly 3,000 yards with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and he surprised some people. Cam McDaniel rushed for 625 yards but in all the run game wasn’t good enough with just 10 total rushing TD’s for the season. T.J. Jones has 65 receptions and nine touchdowns and DaVaris Daniels has 46 receptions and nine touchdowns. Dan Fox has 90 tackles and Carlo Calabrese has 84 tackles But Louis Nix III is lost for this one. Notre Dame averages 27.1 points per game and their opponents average 22.9 points. Notre Dame won some games many thought they had little chance to win and struggled in games some thought were a given but overall it was a successful year for Brian Kelly’s team.
Notre Dame is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven neutral site games, and 2-5 against the spread in their last seven bowl games. Rutgers is 5-1-1 against the spread in their last seven bowl games, 6-2-1 against the spread in their last nine neutral site games, and 1-5 against the spread in their last six games.
The total in this one is set at 52.5 and I see it going over that number and that is my free pick. I also have a pick on who will cover the spread that I will post in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
