The Vanderbilt Commodores and the Houston Cougars tangle in the Compass Bowl at Legion Field.
Vanderbilt wasn't on the radar of most experts but at 8-4 in the SEC they were a pretty good squad. The Commodores were not a big offensive team so controlling the scoreboard was a priority and they did well enough in this area with 352 yards and under 25 points. The offense mustered 367 yards and 29 points with a better passing attack then run game. Austyn Carta-Samuels was a solid passer with 2,268 yards on nearly 69% completions but an 11-9 TD-INT ratio wasn't the best. The receiving corp was basically two players with Jordan Matthews (107-1334) and Jonathan Krause (41-703). The ground game was led by Jerron Seymour with 627 yards on 144 carries with Wesley Tate adding 353 yards on 87 totes which was generally a four yards and cloud of dust attack.

Houston had a well deserved reputation as big time offense the past several years but with the move to the AAC an air of unknown surrounded this team. There was no need to worry because the team flourished on both sides of the ball although the team stumbled to the finish line with defeats in three of four. The UH defense did give up some yards with 420 but only 20 points with a top 40 run D leading the way. The offense posted 422 yards and 34 points behind the #23 passing attack that produced 284 yards. John O'Korn had a very productive season with 2,889 yards with 26 touchdowns against just eight picks. Deontay Greenberry was the star of the receivers with 1,106 yards on 76 catches with Daniel Spencer grabbing 50 balls for 764 yards. The Cougars were okay on the ground with Ryan Jackson doing most of the damage with 655 yards on 137 tries with Kenneth Farrow adding another 486 yards on 95 carries.
I am seeing that Vandy quarterback Samuels is touch and go and might not play which has me looking at taking the points. Houston's poor pass defense will be breathing a sight of relief if this comes about but I'll update on game day...
