The Rutgers Scarlet Knights open the season with a trip to Martin Stadium to face the Washington State Cougars.
From week to week I never knew what to expect from Rutgers with neither side of the ball being very predictable. I believe the Scarlet Knights offense could be good if the play from quarterback Gary Nova is competent which means less mistakes and more completions. The RU running game should at least be adequate behind the trio of Paul James, Justin Goodwin and Savon Huggins while TE Tyler Croft and Leonte Carroo will catch their share of passes. Throw an experienced line in to the mix and the Rutgers offense has potential depending on Nova's play while the defense has enough experience to improve with an eye to limiting big plays.

The Washington State Cougars were a team where the offense did plenty of scoring while the the defense gave up a fair share of points. Quarterback Connor Halliday hopes to give the Cougars another season where he throws for a ton of yards and touchdowns but also one where he cuts way back on mistakes. Halliday will have a full compliment of receivers returning and when WSU calls a rare running play Marcus Mason will be the guy with the ball in his hand. The skill positions are set but the offensive line returns just two which might mean quicker throws and another year of little running. The Cougars defense has experience in the front seven but not so much in the secondary.
