The Washington State Cougars and the Rutgers Scarlett Knights close out the first day of action for the 2014 College Football season when they face off on Thursday night in Seattle.
The Washington State Cougars finished with an overall losing record in 2013 after losing a stunner in he New Mexico Bowl but two years into Mike Leach’s regime Wazzu is back on the football map. The WSU offense will be high powered as QB Connor Halliday is back but his 22 interceptions last season is something he needs to work on. The Cougars have options at running back and last year’s New Mexico Bowl hero Theron West should have a bigger role. River Cracraft could be the best of the receivers though Gabe Marks is more proven. The O-Line looks to be thin but Mike Leach had some monsters in his Texas Tech days and I am sure he will have more of the same. The Washington State defense was horrible last year but the D-Line wasn’t bad and they return three of the four. Darryl Monroe Cyrus Coen, and Kache Palcio are a tenacious group at LB and they will need to be as the secondary is untested.
USA TODAY Sports
It is a big season for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights as they make the move into the Big Ten. Gary Nova is back at QB after being benched last season but RU is hopeful that with new offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen should help. Paul James took a beating at RB last season so Justin Goodwin is expected to see action. Wide receiver is the only offensive spot with no returning starters so Rutgers will likely lean on TE Tyler Croft. The Rutgers defense was a sieve last year but Steve Longa was a freshman All American last season at LB. The Rutgers kicking game was also unacceptable last season and Kyle Frederico returns to better his 66% field goal mark.
Washington State is 10-4 against the spread in their last 14 games, 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, and 1-4 against the spread in August. Rutgers is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games and 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games overall.
I expect a ton of scoring here and my free pick is a strong play on the over. I also have a strong pick on who will cover the point spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
