The Auburn Tigers and the Arkansas Razorbacks face off on Saturday in a SEC college football matchup to start their 2014 seasons.
The Auburn Tigers were the surprise team in the nation last season leading most of the way in the National Championship but coming up short in what was a truly magical season. Gus Malzahn proved to be the answer at Head Coach and combined with QB Nick Marshall they were just the right combination, a formula they hope works again this season. Tre Mason is gone but Cameron Artis-Payne played plenty as did Corey Grant and the Tigers roster goes even deeper. Sammie Coates is back at receiver and he was the top target and D’haquille Williams is a JUCO transfer and Quan Bray should be improved over last season. Four of the five starters on Auburn’s offensive line return. Auburn’s defense wasn’t good last year but they should be better and Montravius Adams could develop into one of the better defensive linemen and Cassanova McKinzy and Robensen Therezie are returning starters in the back seven. Auburn had outstanding special teams last season but they need to replace everyone.

It’s just tough to overstate how bad the Arkansas Razorbacks were last season as Bret Bielema’s team lost their final nine games. Arkansas is a run first team these days in the fashion of their head coach but they never got running downhill as Brandon Allen completed less than 50 percent of his passes so the passing game threat wasn’t there and teams loaded up against the run. Alex Collins rushed for over 1,000 yards and he should be better this season but he will still share time with Jonathan Williams. The Arkansas passing game was awful so it’s tough to know what they even have to work with as tight end Hunter Henry looks to be a player and Keon Hatcher and Demetrius Wilson will be the receivers. Arkansas gets a new defensive coordinator in Robb Smith who has NFL experience at Tampa Bay but the defense returns just four starters. Trey Flowers anchors the defensive line but they secondary was terrible last season as were the linebackers and Tevin Mitchel returns at corner where he was roasted repeatedly last season. Bielema came to Arkansas with a lot of fanfare and if they pick up where they left off this could be a very long season.
Auburn is 8-0 against the spread in their last eight SEC games, 7-0 against the spread in their last seven home games, and 13-3 against the spread in their last 16 games. Arkansas is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven SEC games, 3-12 against the spread in their last 15 road games, and 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 games. Arkansas has covered the point spread in five of their last seven games at Auburn.
The defenses aren’t stars in this one and expect plenty of points and scoring and we could do three digits combined so my free pick is the over. I also have a strong pick on who will cover the point spread and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
