Fred Yager Stadium and the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks host the Marshall Thundering Herd in the season opener.
The Marshall Thundering Herd were a scoring machine a season ago and with most of the major contributors back the scoreboard operator will once again be sweating through four quarters of scoring.Thundering Herd QB Rakeem Cato has the potential to break the 4,000 yard passing mark and if that wasn't enough he has another possible 500 yards in his legs. Tommy Shuler will likely haul in another 100 receptions for Marshall and when opponents are busy trying to figure out a way to slow down the air assault Kevin Grooms and Steward Butler will be plying their wares on the ground behind an O-Line that features a couple of All CUSA performers. If the Thundering Herd can improve the run D the defense will be solid all around.

It looks like Andrew Hendrix will begin the season under center in Chuck Martin's first season on the sideline for Miami (Ohio). I say begin because I'm not convinced he will remain the starter with Austin Gearing having experience and some running ability but the Redhawks are looking for a legitimate passing threat that can get the ball further down the field more then five yards. Dawan Scott will be the top target in the Redhawks passing attack and Spencer Treadwell will get most of the work on the ground. The issues for Miami (Ohio) are that Scott caught 28 balls a year ago and Treadwell fell shy of the 200 yard mark so moving the ball is no guarantee with an O-Line that struggled in all phases. The Redhawks defense isn't big up front which is a concern versus the run and even more of a concern if the offense doesn't help out in the field position battle.
Based strictly on paper Marshall has a sizeable advantage on both sides of the ball. The question is can the Thundering Herd pour it on for 60 minutes to cover the huge chalk which makes me cringe...
