The Georgia Southern Eagles open 2014 with the North Carolina State Wolfpack at Carter Finley Stadium.
Injuries ravaged North Carolina State in 2013 and after a decent start things went downhill fast. QB Brandon Mitchell broke his foot and Pete Thomas did okay in relief for the Wolfpack but Mitchell graduated and Thomas transferred to UL Monroe which opens the door for Florida transfer Jacoby Brissett who is a former four star recruit. Shadrach Thornton gives the Wolfpack potential on the ground while the receiver by committee passing attack is led by Bryan Underwood who had 32 receptions a year ago. Success of this NC State team depends on getting the most out of the experience they have on both sides of the ball and hopefully staying healthy.

Jeff Monken left Georgia Southern for Army with Willie Fritz taking over a program that was hit hard by injuries and is entering their first season in the Sun Belt. The Eagles were known for their option attack which meant plenty of running and little passing but quarterback Kevin Ellison who was the 2nd leading runner last year will put the ball in the air more often. The Eagles backfield returns six players that totaled more then 200 yards and will need to settle on a few to do the bulk of the work. Virtually the entire receiving corps returns if the Eagles decide to throw while the line is experienced. The defense has some experience as well but needs to get pressure on the quarterback.
This is a tough one to figure and the easy thing to do is lay the chalk and hope for a North Carolina State rout. I don't think Georgia Southern has the right personel to run what was the triple option so I'd worry about the scoring here. Not a game for me...
