The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles begin 2014 on the road with the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
After winning the CUSA in 2011 Southern Mississippi lost virtually everyone and won one game in two seasons. Nick Mullens appears to be the guy under center for the Golden Eagles despite a freshman campaign that saw him complete 49% of his throws with far too many mistakes all while running for his life. USM is hopeful those numbers improve with experience and having his three top receivers back. Jalen Richard is the only running back of note for Southern Miss and he averaged less then four yards per tote. The O-Line returns five with starting experience but the unit needs vast improvement while the defense has plenty of everything but that has to translate in to performance.

Mississippi State is looking to make some noise in the SEC and if the scoring picks up and helps out the defense there is a possibility that happens. If the Bulldogs offense does some damage it probably means dual threat quarterback Dak Prescott's passing is catching up to his running as his legs are an obvious strength. The air game has the pieces in place to get better with MSU getting their the top four receivers back including deep threat Jameon Lewis who looks to break the 1,000 yard barrier. Mississippi State turns to Josh Robinson as the top running back option and his explosiveness will combine nicely with Prescott providing the line opens some holes. The defense is deep and experienced and can make plays.
On paper Mississippi State has clear advantages in most areas and I would think they exert themselves in the opener so I will lay the big chalk...
