The New Mexico State Aggies visit the Georgia State Panthers in the Sun Belt opener for both squads.
The New Mexico State Aggies opened 2014 with a 28-10 victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs as a seven point underdog. The Aggies did just enough passing and throwing to accumulate 315 yards to overcome the run only Mustangs who ran for 259 yards but threw for six yards with an interception. Tyler Rogers completed 18-27 for 118 yards with a pair of scores and a pick in an ultra short passing attack while the run produced 197 yards on 47 totes to average just over four yards. Larry Rose III was the Aggies offensive star with 130 yards on the ground with a TD while also grabbing a six yard scoring pass. This game was all about the New Mexico State defense keeping the Cal Poly option from breaking off big gains.

The Georgia State Panthers turned to their offense to pull out a 38-37 decision over the Abilene Christian Wildcats to begin 2014 with a win. A Wil Lutz 26 yard field goal with four seconds remaining in regulation capped off a 17-7 Panthers 4th quarter rally. GSU won the yardage battle 566-499 but lost the turnover battle 3-1. Nick Arbuckle threw for 413 yards with four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions with Lynquez Blair and Joel Ruiz leading the Georgia State receiving corps with a combined 15 receptions for 229 yards and three scores. Krysten Hammon ran for a game high 74 yards but the score dictated that the Panthers pass the ball rather then pound it on the ground especially with the Wildcats leading 37-29 with 6:36 left in the game.
I don't think we have seen enough from either team to back them with confidence but I was surprised New Mexico State won their opener. For now I'll back the Aggies but there are better games out there...
