The Old Dominion Monarchs play the North Carolina State Wolfpack on Saturday.
Old Dominion won their season opener 41-28 over the Hampton Pirates. QB Taylor Heinicke completed 29 of 40 passed for 281 yards to go along with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. WR Zach Pascal caught 8 balls for 99 yards and two touchdowns. RB Gerard Johnson carried the ball 22 times for 137 yards in the win. The Old Dominion defense gave up 416 yards but only 9 of those yards came on the ground. In 2013, the Monarchs were involved in a lot of high scoring games. Their offense was hugely productive, unfortunately so were their opponents. It is not difficult for the quarterback of a newly formed football program to set school records, but it is going to be near impossible for future Monarchs to pass Taylor Heinicke's marks. After two and a half seasons as a starter, Heinicke has thrown for 11,483 yards and 102 touchdowns, with an impressive 69.2% completion rate. There are concerns at receiver and on the offensive line since both units have suffered significant turnaround. Defensively, the good news is that almost all the defensive players who mattered in 2013 return. The bad news is that the 2013 defense was frequently a liability, so returning the same players is not exactly a source of great optimism.

North Carolina State defeated Georgia Southern 24-23 on Saturday. The Wolfpack struggled in the first half and were down 14 points at the break. North Carolina State allowed 438 total yards to Georgia Southern, while producing 464 total yards on offense. QB Jacoby Brissett completed 28 of 40 passed for 291 yards along with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. WR Bo Hines hauled in 9 catches for 85 yards, while RB Shadrach Thornton carried the ball 10 times for 73 yards in the win. In 2013, the season went sharply downhill from the Wolfpack’s 3-1 start as they lost eight straight to finish 3-9 overall and 0-8 in ACC play. The offense lost both of the guys who started at quarterback in 2013 Brandon Mitchell and Pete Thomas, to graduation and transfer, respectively. Both players under-performed in the role last year and the team hands the keys of the offense to Florida transfer Jacoby Brissett, who sat out last year due to transfer regulations. At running back, the top three backs from 2013 all return in the form of junior Shad Thornton, sophomore Matt Dayes and senior Tony Creecy. The offensive line at NC State is big and experienced. The defense is mediocre at best, except for the secondary, which was the most productive unit on defense last year.
Old Dominion should have some success offensively against an average North Carolina State defense at best. The Wolfpack should have no problem scoring against one of the worst defenses in the country. So I think this will be a high scoring affair and this one should reach 70 plus points. I’m taking the over.
