The UCLA Bruins and the Memphis Tigers face off on Saturday in week two college football action.
The UCLA Bruins opened their season in Charlottesville against Virginia and while it was a much tougher game than many thought it would be the Bruins walked out with a win. UCLA was outgained in the win 386 yards to 358 but they won the battle on the scoreboard. QB Brett Hundley completed 60 percent of his passes for 242 yards and he ran for 39 yards and a touchdown. RB Paul Perkins rushed for 80 yards and led the UCLA ground game and Jordan Payton led the receivers with eight catches for 98 yards. Defensively UCLA allowed 266 yard through the air and 120 yards on the ground but grabbed two interceptions.. Eric Kendricks was UCLA’s leading tackler with 16 and he also had an interception and Myles Jack had 13 tackles. UCLA has some areas of concern as far as pass blocking among others they will need to address if they hope to compete for the Pac-12 title.

The Memphis Tigers player pushover Austin Peay for their opener and they took care of business winning easily and making it look as easy s it was. Memphis rolled up 545 yards of offense while allowing just 146 yards and winning 63-0. QB Paxton Lynch completed over 74 percent of his passes for 242 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and he ran for two touchdowns. Jarvis Cooper rushed for 101 yards on just eight carries and Doroland Dorceus had two rushing touchdowns. Mose Frazier and Alan Cross led the Memphis receivers with four catches each as the Tigers spread the ball around. The Memphis defense ad two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery and just weren’t on the field much. Tank Jakes had six tackles with two of them being for a loss and Ernest Suttles and Leonard Pegues recorded the sacks. This is a long road trip and a big step up for Memphis.
UCLA is 4-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven home games, and 9-3 against the spread following a game that they covered the spread. Memphis is 4-0 against the spread in their last four non-conference games, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven road games, and 7-3 against the spread following a game that they covered the spread.
While I believe Memphis is improved, it’s tough for me to believe they are improved enough to hang with the Bruins for their home opener. While UCLA didn’t look like a top team last week, it should serve as a wake up call and they just have too much talent on the roster and I give them the nod here to cover the big number.
