The Iowa Hawkeyes travel to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers on Saturday afternoon.
Iowa dropped to 2-1 on the year after losing to Iowa State 20-17 last weekend. Iowa defeated Northern Iowa and Ball State to start the 2014 season. Against Iowa State, the Hawkeyes gained only 275 total yards and turned the ball over twice. QB Jake Rudock completed 16 of 24 passes for 146 yards and 1 interception. WR Ray Hamilton caught 2 balls for 41 yards, while RB Mark Weisman carried the ball 16 times for 49 yards and a touchdown. The Hawkeyes defense allowed 337 total yards, 255 passing against their in-state rival. Iowa has not established the rushing attack that the Hawkeyes are used to having behind their massive offense line. The Hawkeyes are not playing efficient on offense, while the defense is playing well so far this season. Iowa will now play one more out of conference game before starting Big Ten play next week.

The Pittsburgh Panthers improved to 3-0 on the season after beating Florida International 42-25 last weekend. The Panthers have started off well with wins over Delaware and at Boston College too. The Panthers offense is playing at a high level as they rank 5th in rushing yards per game and 16th in the nation in points scored at 44.7 per game. Against FIU, Pittsburgh produced 422 yards of total offense with an unbalanced but productive offensive attack. QB Chad Voytik completed 9 of 17 passes for 89 yards to go along with 1 touchdown and one interception. WR Tyler Boyd caught 4 balls for 50 yards, while RB James Conner rushed an outstanding 31 times for 177 yards and 3 touchdowns. Conner lost two fumbles deep in FIU territory when it appeared that Pittsburgh was about to put more points on the board but obviously rebounded to come up with another strong performance on the ground. Pittsburgh’s defense allowed only 293 total yards, forced 1 turnover, and sacked FIU’s quarterbacks four times. The Panthers will now face their toughest test of the season thus far.
This could be one of the better and most competitive games this weekend. Iowa will be fired up coming off the loss to Iowa State and Pittsburgh wants to keep things rolling heading into conference play. I think the line has been inflated a little but here. Iowa should be able to slow down the Pittsburgh offense and I think the Hawkeyes will have some success running the ball offensively.
